The Nylon Corset Top is an elevated version of the simple black tube top. The specialized fabric gives it a modern edgy feel while the semi-sheer lacing gives it a racy delicacy, for a simple yet visually interesting design.
(Lining view) This top features zero visible raw seams and almost-invisible hems: four in total, on the sides of the bodice. It is fully lined, with boning sewn into the inside.
Grommet trim is sewn onto the hems, leaving small openings in the stitching for the ribbon.
The nylon fabric was difficult to work with because, similarly to leather, every hole made by the needle is permanent. Because of this, pinning the pattern pieces to the fabric required minimal pins and only where there was a seam allowance. Additionally, many of the pieces couldn't be pinned before sewing, and instead had to be clipped or simply held in place by hand.
After cutting the pieces and sewing them together (for the front and back of the bodice), boning had to be cut and fitted to a casing, then sewn onto the lining: 4 pieces for the front of the top, and 2 on the back, 1 inch away from the side hems. Next, the lining was sewn onto the nylon along the top and bottom, then the whole piece was inverted. The sides were then baby-hemmed with a couple-millimeters wide hem. Afterwards, the grommet trim was cut to size and shape (with the ends of the ribbon hemmed with a zig zag stitch) and sewn onto the side sides of the hems at the outmost side. The trim was then sewn on the innermost side intermittently, to allow room for the black ribbon to pass under the trim later on. To complete the hem, the sides were turned in 1 inch, and sewn down on the now-innermost side in black thread, just next to the grommet trim, so that the stitching would be minimally seen on the outside or the inside of the top. Finally, the front and back of the top are laced together via the grommets.
